Meme: Not-BTT

So BTT was not really interesting to me today (I can't remember the topic, and I can't be bothered to find the post), so I thought I'd toss out my own reading-related question:

What's the best thing you've read this year? Yes, I mean in 2009.



The first paragraph of Beloved. Mind you, I haven't read much more--I'm currently somewhere on page 2--but that one paragraph gave me more fodder for the class that I'm teaching on it than I ever thought possible. I could teach the entire class through the prism of that paragraph--that's how freakin' good it is.

So, what about you? What good words have you seen? Ad copy? Street signs? Headlines?

I've re-read Sir Terry Pratchett's "Nomes" trilogy - haven't been near those three books for about 5 years, and I'd forgotten how much fun they are...

I've also re-read "The Pirate Loop" and "Peacemaker", which I adore...

I've been reading the Grimm's fairy tales - the complete collection and its put me in this wonderful daze. It's even got me writing a doomed love story in the stylee. It's just nice to hear these original fantasy tales.

Hmmm...a novel called Broken For You-the author escapes me and I'm too lazy to go to my room and scope it out, but it essentially starts out with just two very different and lonely women coming together, then as they develop a friendship with each other, change each other and begin bringing other people into their lives, creating a family of their own.

Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. I was supposed to be reading it for my son, but I wound up reading it all in one sitting. I don't care how old you are, those poems are timeless. lol

The Nomes books look like fun. I need to actually read the two Martha books, since I've only heard the audios.

They are timeless--the best children's lit is because it's just good literature!

Yes indeed! I refuse to let my three year old read just anything. I want him to grow up knowing how to seperate literature from the fad. He will grow up to know that Twilight was just a phase and not worthy of all the publicity it received. lol

The Nomes books are short and sweet (and a lot of fun!)

I strongly recommend the actual novels, because the audio of Pirate Loop misses out some good stuff...
