Small Victories: Week in Review
Oct. 24th, 2008 02:55 pmSo the week was short here--love a Fall Break, especially one that encompasses a Monday, because, really, Monday is the absolute worst day of the week. Going in to work on a Wednesday was positively delicious, even if I placed an entire Monday and Tuesday's worth of stress on my body.
And so begins the weekend, which looks to be filled with reading (papers, Northanger Abbey, and some various texts about digital learning), a smidge of knitting (trapped on sleeve island with Cordelia), and some home time. The weather has turned chilly and my mind is on gumbo...
- None of my pants fit me. I haven't been actively trying to lose weight, but changes in my diet and daily activity level have resulted in the loss of about 30 pounds since the wedding in May. I'm keeping this in the small victories column since I a) haven't been trying to lose (so it's a passive victory at best) and b) need to buy new pants, which is a rung above shoe and handbag shopping on my list of "Things I Need But Hate to Shop For." Don't hate me 'cause I'm slimming. I'll likely gain it all back over Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- I got my mojo back with regard to reading student work. I actually have managed to read a bit at a time and enjoy it again, which is something that's been bugging me for a while. I don't like reading a large number of papers in one go; it's too difficult to really respond to their writing. Working on a managable schedule this week has been really lovely. We'll see if I can transfer that to the set I assigned yesterday.
- Have had what I consider great meetings with my writing students this week. Love love love that.
- Have read some great writing in the fictional world as well, which is delightful!
- I signed up for NaNoWriMo because I'm a joiner. I may not finish, but I'm going to try! I'm going into November with an opening line purloined from Caleb Williams and my trusty AlphaSmart 3000.
- I've sorted out a direction to take for an academic article. That feels nice.

on 2008-10-25 04:39 am (UTC)(Although I really shouldn't be making such a fuss about people signing up for NaNo, after all I just wrote a 50,000+ word story in 2 months... Something about pots and kettles springs to mind!)
Hooray for losing weight even if passively (best way if you ask me!)
Do you like "Northanger Abbey"?

Well, it's my first time. We're hosting a group in our writing center and I thought it might be fun; since the whole point of NaNo is to just write, not edit, I'm thinking that I can just slap the words down on the page and worry about making it all make sense later.
I'm not planning a DW fic, though I suspect that some character types will naturally make their way into the story since, let's face it, I'm writing them in fanfic because they resonate with me on some personal level.

It is the best way--no muss, no fuss, just an increasingly unwearable wardrobe! I really can't complain about it.

I do, although not as much as the rest of her novels. It feels thin to me in places--which isn't surprising--but it's the right one for the course, so I've got to go with it.
Any other semester, if I needed to fill a spot with an Austen novel, I'd have chosen Mansfield Park.
