We had a great weekend traveling; now that we're back, it's time to pack up the house and get things moving--literally.

Little!Zoas appears to be fairly active these days. I rested my hand on my tummy this morning, and I felt a wee jump of skin, then another. Perhaps I should stop patting my belly.

I've got some catching up to do here on the ol' LJ. I'll be a bit slow at that as I've got a ton o' work this week and next plus packing/moving. If there's something you'd like me to see/think I might enjoy, please drop a link in the comments and I'll move it to the top of the queue.

In the next two days: how I spent my summer vacation and a bit of info about my new pet.

Pong. Hands down. Perfect game, IMHO.

Have just gotten into the sweet new ride that is Dreamwidth. The name's the same. Not leaving LJ; just wanted to stake a claim yonder.

Thanks to the kind soul who hooked me up with an invite. Happy to pass on the favor as I gain codes to distribute.

I've never been much for knitted toys, but I might have to succumb to these. LittleZoas needs hand puppets.

Too Real?

One of my students introduced me to a new (to me, anyway) reality show on the Fox Reality network. The show is called Solitary, and it appears to be setup like a psychological experiment, with contestants in isolation chambers, their every move controlled by a disembodied voice named Val.

I'm not sure what I want to do with this just yet with regard to my class, but I thought I'd ask around to see if any of you are familiar with this one--or if you're not, what your initial response is to the premise. I'm a bit horrified that I wasn't horrified, but intrigued. My co-worker looked a bit queasy when I told him about it.

I love this quote from the epic Dalek/Cybermen battle. I know it's cheesy, I know to some it's an OTT moment, but I really, really loved watching them face off at the end of S2.

I want to go to bed, but there's another episode of Look Around You on adult swim, and I just can't look away!

My Visitor

I've been hosting a special visitor for a few days, and while he's been happily busy helping me grade papers (my life--let me share the excitement), today I was so pleased to take him for an outing. Of course, as he should know by now, nothing is quite what he's expecting.

Where'd you go? )

I wanted it so badly, but I've been able to shove that want aside, telling myself that it wasn't right yet, that I could wait, that something better would be around the bend.

And then they went and improved it. *cries*

Do I need it? No, of course not. But want is a mighty strong motivator. I suppose I could start trawling eBay to see if I can get a good deal on a first-gen model, but I want the new hawtness.

Just a bit of feline fun under the cut today. Happy Saturday!

Yanked this from [ profile] hobbitblue.

When you see this post, post a poem to your LJ. She chose one of my favorites (Elizabeth Bishop's "One Art," a gorgeous villanelle), but here's another I quite like. YMMV.

"A Map of Love"
Donald Justice

Your face more than others' faces
Maps the half-remembered places
I have come to while I slept—
Continents a dream had kept
Secret from all waking folk
Till to your face I awoke,
And remembered then the shore,
And the dark interior.

Today's Booking Through Thursday exhorts us to stray from the usual path (posting on your blog, then linking the post to the BTT blog through comments) and to actually conduct a discussion on the BTT blog itself.

Why I find this amusing below the cut )

fourzoas: (SD Velma book)
Something different for Booking Through Thursday today, and frankly, I could use this difference:

But, enough about books … Other things have words, too, right? Like … songs!

If you’re anything like me, there are songs that you love because of their lyrics; writers you admire because their songs have depth, meaning, or just a sheer playfulness that has nothing to do with the tunes.

So, today’s question?

* What songs … either specific songs, or songs in general by a specific group or writer … have words that you love?
* Why?
* And … do the tunes that go with the fantastic lyrics live up to them?

You don’t have to restrict yourself to modern songsters, either … anyone who wants to pick Gilbert & Sullivan, for example, is just fine with me. Lerner & Loewe? Steven Sondheim? Barenaked Ladies? Fountains of Wayne? The Beatles? Anyone at all…

So what are Zoas fond of? )

First day back today. Long day. Another long day tomorrow.

Let's have a meme.

So BTT was not really interesting to me today (I can't remember the topic, and I can't be bothered to find the post), so I thought I'd toss out my own reading-related question:

What's the best thing you've read this year? Yes, I mean in 2009.

What's my answer? )

My magic word under the cut )

So the big news on my F-List today regards the announcement that SUP (LJ's owner) has laid off a significant portion of its US support workforce. I gather that the general concern is for a decrease in support for the platform, which I think is valid.

I thought I'd make a post to gather up some links for my own future reference and that might be of use to some of you.

Anyway...what to do? )
